Data Centre Industry Update – 10th November 2021

Globally, we are seeing a huge increase in the level of data centre activity. This surge is largely brought about by remote working and other measures as a result of COVID-19. This is a turning point for work-management structures and the industry as a whole.

This seismic growth in online activity has created jobs in tech, engineering, construction, and more as a result. Our previous update discussed the motion of a data centre moratorium being brought before the Dáil to devise a whole-government strategy, the demand for Irish electricity is set to soar by up to 43% in the next decade as a result of data activity, and Facebook has purchased a large plot of land in Denmark with plans in place for the construction of a major data plant.

Here are this edition’s updates:

  • Homes and hospitals will be the priority over the likes of data facilities in the case of blackouts throughout this year’s Winter according to the government’s contingency plan.
  • The Irish county of Offaly is planning to conduct a feasibility study into examining the integrations of data facilities with renewable energy and green hydrogen.
  • DIFE is set to develop a new Data Centre Technician programme and bursary initiative in conjunction with Amazon Web Services (AWS), starting in January 2022 in Drogheda.
  • Irish owned Echelon Data Centres has announced a €215m deal with a partner of Starwood Capital Group to jointly purchase and construct its second UK data centre in Buckinghamshire.
  • US digital infrastructure group, Equinix, is set to build a €72m international business exchange data facility in Salford, UK.
