Data Centre Industry Update – 15th September 2021
Globally, we are seeing a huge increase in the level of data centre activity. This surge is largely brought about by remote working as a result of COVID-19. This is a turning point for work-management structures and the industry as a whole.
This seismic growth in online activity has created jobs in tech, engineering, construction, and more as a result. Our previous update discussed the importance of Ireland reaching its 2030 energy targets, potential rolling blackouts over Winter as pressures on electricity grids remain present, and the commencement of work on Southeast Europe’s first hyperscale data facility in Romania.
Here are this edition’s updates:
- ITRenew who decommissions data centre hardware from the world’s global cloud service providers is set to create 40 new jobs as a new facility is set to open in Co. Louth.
- Private equity real estate company, Prescient Capital have renamed their £20 million facilities in Coleraine the “Prescient Data Centre” as it gears up for growth in the region.
- A High Court challenge has been brought against An Bord Pleanala’s decision to give the go-ahead for EngineNode’s new data centre in Co Meath.
- Tànaiste Leo Varadkar has called for a “huge expansion” in wind power to tackle the growing constraints on the Irish electricity grid due to increasing data facility demands.
- Google will invest in the expansion of its cloud data centres and renewable energy facilities in Germany to improve the digital sovereignty of the region.
