Data Centre Industry Update – 16th February 2022

Globally, we are seeing a huge increase in the level of data centre activity. This surge is largely brought about by remote working and other measures as a result of COVID-19. This is a turning point for work-management structures and the industry as a whole.

This seismic growth in online activity has created jobs in tech, engineering, construction, and more as a result. In our previous update, we discussed how data facility operators in Ireland are shocked following EirGrid’s announcement that they will not permit further data centre access to the Irish electricity grid, Irish-owned company, Echelon, has received funding of €855 million for the completion of four new data centres, and the electricity consumed by data centres has accounted for 73% of Ireland’s electricity usage between 2015-2020.

Here are this edition’s updates:

  • The Irish tech giant, Intercom is now hosting data in Ireland in an attempt to localise European data within the EEA following the announcement that they are leasing data centre space from Amazon.
  • Ireland has made moves to prevent any potential electricity outages following the recent growth of activity in the data industry after announcing the development of 9 new electrical plants.
  • Irish data centre operator, Equinix, has officially launched its new Network Edge services in Dublin, alongside the launch in the European markets of Paris, Helsinki, Milan, & Stockholm.
  • IDA Ireland is committed to helping companies develop new data facilities in Ireland following the recent announcement that EirGrid will not connect any new facilities to the Irish power grid until 2028.
  • European data provider, AtlasEdge, is expanding its base of current operation following the acquisition of England’s largest purpose-built centre in Leeds, UK.
