Globally, we are seeing a huge increase in the level of data centre activity. This surge is largely brought about by remote working as a result of COVID-19. This is a turning point for work-management structures and the industry as a whole.

This seismic growth in online activity has created jobs in tech, engineering, construction, and more as a result. Our previous update discussed Art data centre’s plan in Co. Clare to triple in size to €1.2 billion, the availability of power as a key factor when deciding where to locate a data facility the increasing amounts of pressure on Irish water to take a tougher stance with water-guzzling Irish data facilities.

Here are this edition’s updates:

  • Apple has been granted an extension in planning permission for the Athenry data plant where plans were envisioned for an €850 million project.
  • Ireland has been identified as a key growth market for the continuing data centre boom with 6 million square metres of data centre space available across 15 European countries.
  • Dropbox has outlined its commitment to the fight against global warming by announcing all of its data facilities are working on 100% renewable electricity.
  • The European data centre market is growing at a rapid pace as more and more companies are becoming reliant on cloud computing.
  • CyrusOne is set to build a giant 21 MW facility in Madrid expanding on its already established European footprint.
