Data Centre Industry Update – 19th January 2022
Globally, we are seeing a huge increase in the level of data centre activity. This surge is largely brought about by remote working and other measures as a result of COVID-19. This is a turning point for work-management structures and the industry as a whole.
This seismic growth in online activity has created jobs in tech, engineering, construction, and more as a result. Our previous update discussed how new data centres that are to be developed in Ireland must outline the ability to generate on-site power, Schneider Electric’s 5-part framework attempting to improve the sustainability of global data facilities, and wind power from above Amazon’s Northern Ireland data facility will be used to power on-site operations.
Here are this edition’s updates:
- EirGrid has announced that it will not connect any new data facilities to the power supply in Dublin for the “foreseeable future” as energy security and electricity consumption concerns continue.
- IDA Ireland has issued their concerns as to how some data centre’s across the country have been “scapegoated” in relation to the energy supply issues and potential rolling blackouts.
- TikTok’s new €420 million data centre which was set to be located in Clondalkin, Co. Dublin has been delayed due to construction shutdowns and pandemic-related supply chain delays.
- Hiking energy demands on the internet are causing problems for data centres across the globe to become more sustainable as countries strive to reach respective emissions targets.
- The potential development of Ireland’s first data centre in the west of the country moves a step closer to completion as land sale near the former Asahi site in Killala goes through.
