Data Centre Industry Update – 1st September 2021
Globally, we are seeing a huge increase in the level of data centre activity. This surge is largely brought about by remote working as a result of COVID-19. This is a turning point for work-management structures and the industry as a whole.
This seismic growth in online activity has created jobs in tech, engineering, construction, and more as a result. Our previous update discussed Apple’s extended planning permission for their Athenry based data facility, Ireland’s identification as a key region for the continuing data centre boom across Europe, and Dropbox’s commitment to global warming as all of their data centres will now run off renewable electricity.
Here are this edition’s updates:
- Minister for Climate Eamon Ryan spoke of the importance of Ireland hitting its energy targets by 2030 cannot be jeopardised by the number of data facilities in the state.
- Blackouts cannot be ruled out across Ireland this Winter according to the Department of Environment as data centres continue to apply pressure to Irish electricity grids.
- Environmental groups in Clare have been protesting against Dublin-based Art’s potential new data facility planned for the region and describe it as a disaster waiting to happen.
- Work has commenced on Southeast Europe’s first hyper-scale data facility in Romania with ClusterPower planning to become the largest data facility in the country.
- Europe’s top 4 data centre markets (Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, & Paris) are heading for a record-breaking year, with these markets combining for 2000MW of capacity supply for the first time ever.
