Data Centre Industry Update – 21st July 2021

Globally, we are seeing a huge increase in the level of data centre activity. This surge is largely brought about by remote working as a result of COVID-19. This is a turning point for work-management structures and the industry as a whole.

This seismic growth in online activity has created jobs in tech, engineering, construction, and more as a result. Our previous update discussed Tanaiste Leo Varadkar outlining the development of data centres in Ireland, Apple seeking permission for Athenry database, and Vodafone’s commitment to 100% renewable electricity sources.

Here are this edition’s updates:

  • An Bord Pleanala has given permission to EngineNode to proceed with a project that will generate 500 jobs during construction and 275 jobs upon completion near Bracetown, Co. Meath.
  • The ESB will more than likely be asked to deploy about 200MW of temporary electricity generating capacity in Dublin as the government aims to reduce the number of blackouts over the winter.
  • TikTok is set to move into its new €420 million European data home in Clondalkin with the facility being classified as ready for use by the end of 2021.
  • Iron Mountain is buying a 10MW Frankfurt data center from Singapore-based Keppel for €76 million in one of the major European data centre hubs.
  • Secureworks the security analytics and threat intel services provider has set up a cloud data storage instance in Frankfurt, Germany.
