Data Centre Industry Update – 30th March 2022

Globally, we are seeing a huge increase in the level of data centre activity. This surge is largely brought about by remote working and other measures as a result of COVID-19. This is a turning point for work-management structures and the industry as a whole.

This seismic growth in online activity has created jobs in tech, engineering, construction, and more as a result. In our previous update, we discussed how Nautilus Technologies is set to build a new €35 million floating data centre in Limerick, EngineNode’s planned new 24.5-hectare data site has been brought before the high court following unauthorised works, and Principal Global Investors has announced a new €155 million fund for the acquisition of data facilities across Europe.

Here are this edition’s updates:

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) has committed over £1.8 billion to UK data centres and other cloud infrastructure amidst strong growth patterns within the data industry in the region.
  • Over 1,100 homes in the region of Clare could benefit from the high-grade heating infrastructure generated within the planned new Art Data Centre Ltd. facility in Ennis.
  • South Dublin County Council (SDCC) has voted against the construction of further data facilities in the region, banning any new developments between 2022-2028.
  • CyrusOne Data Centre has joined an orchard initiative in Ireland aimed at providing more trees for the bee population in the region as part of its sustainability strategy.
  • Facebook, Whatsapp, and Instagram’s parent company, Meta has announced plans for the construction of a new €1 billion data facility in the Toledo region of Spain.
