Data Centre Industry Update – 5th January 2022

Globally, we are seeing a huge increase in the level of data centre activity. This surge is largely brought about by remote working and other measures as a result of COVID-19. This is a turning point for work-management structures and the industry as a whole.

This seismic growth in online activity has created jobs in tech, engineering, construction, and more as a result. Our previous update discussed how Amazon’s potential data facility development in Dublin has been met by the opposition, the Irish government could restrict the future construction or development of data facilities on the island, and major data centre developer CyrusOne has plans to build a new 90MW facility in Frankfurt.

Here are this edition’s updates:

  • New data centres that are to be developed in the Republic of Ireland may have to show their ability to generate power on-site given current demands on the electricity grid.
  • Digital 9 Infrastructure has acquired a data centre and landing station for North Sea Connect cable for £15 million off the coast of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the UK.
  • Schneider Electric has designed and published a 5-part framework that is focused on improving the sustainability of data facilities and minimising environmental impact.
  • Wind power from above Amazon’s data facility in Northern Ireland will be used to power the tech giant’s centre for its fifth wind-based project in the UK.
  • Amazon is planning to establish a new Azure data centre in Belgium with the region set to provide greater resiliency and redundancy through 3 availability zones.
