Data Centre Industry Update – 7th July 2021
Globally, we are seeing a huge surge in data centre activity. This surge is largely brought about by remote working as a result of COVID-19. This is a turning point for work-management structures and the industry as a whole.
This seismic growth in online activity has created jobs in tech, engineering, construction, and more as a result. Our previous update discussed Amazon’s new Irish facility, potential ‘rolling blackouts’ for Ireland and Cluster Power’s Romanian facility plans.

- Tanaiste Leo Varadkar outlines the development of data centres in Ireland. This provides both great strategic opportunities but we must be aware of their electricity demands.
- Global giant Apple is seeking planning permission extension for Athenry facility with hopes of work beginning as soon as possible.
- Vodafone’s entire Irish operations are now 100% powered from renewable electricity sources – including the company’s facilities.
- Europe’s Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact, a movement to eliminate the environmental footprint of these centres by 2030, has taken a set of proposals to the European Union.
- Providing a safe, compliant, and versatile environment for storage is driving data centre growth in Ireland.
