Data Centre Industry Update – 8th December 2021
Globally, we are seeing a huge increase in the level of data centre activity. This surge is largely brought about by remote working and other measures as a result of COVID-19. This is a turning point for work-management structures and the industry as a whole.
This seismic growth in online activity has created jobs in tech, engineering, construction, and more as a result. Our previous update discussed how Ireland ranked amongst the worst performers in the 2021 climate rankings following increased data centre requirements, Amazon has filed to begin construction on two new data facilities in Clonshaugh, Co. Dublin, and an application made to challenge Apple’s new €850 million data centre in Athenry.
Here are this edition’s updates:
- The DataCentres Ireland event at the RDS has seen Ireland be described as a hotspot for data facilities as the Irish government continues to push the digital agenda through investment and employment.
- Amazon’s potential data facility development in Dublin has been met by opposition with parties arguing the development is hiding Amazon’s “true size and energy-guzzling” status.
- The Irish government could restrict the future construction or development of data facilities on the island in order to meet current energy and sustainability targets according to the new Climate Action Plan.
- Protests were held outside DataCentres Ireland’s recent event in The RDS with Ecosocialist group, People Before Profit, calling for a halt to the construction of these facilities on Irish soil.
- Major data centre developer CyrusOne has plans to build a new 90MW facility in Frankfurt, Germany with all construction set to be completed by Q3 2024.
