HS2 Curzon Street Viaduct Progress

AA Euro Group Powers Progress on Birmingham’s HS2 Curzon Street Viaduct.

AA Euro Group is honoured to be partnered with Balfour Beatty Vinci (BBV) as the specialist labour provider for the HS2 Curzon Street Viaduct project.

Witnessing the first completed sections rise from the ground fills us with immense pride for the exceptional work our team has delivered.

Our team, comprised of highly skilled and locally recruited General Foremen, Foremen, Chargehands, Lifting-Supervisors, Formwork Carpenters, Steel Fixers and Scaffolders represents the backbone of this project’s success.

Curzon Viaduct No.3 is approximately 300 metres long, up to 65 metres wide and will be supported by 30 piers. As it approaches Curzon Street Station, the deck of the viaduct widens from a single deck at the eastern end to four separate decks at the western end to maximise daylight in the public space underneath.

HS2 Project Update

The HS2 high-speed rail programme is progressing with a focus on delivery certainty and efficiency. HS2 Ltd has re-sequenced construction, prioritising a 50-mile “test area” between Washwood Heath and the Wendover Green Tunnel to complete track, power, and signalling first. This phased approach allows early testing while wider construction continues, ensuring the programme stays on track despite its complexity.

Across the route, major tunnelling, earthworks, and bridge construction are well underway, with tens of thousands of people engaged across sites. While the original Phase 1 opening window remains 2029–2033, the reset prioritises testing and key civil works first, helping to stabilise the schedule and optimise delivery for the remainder of the network.

AA Euro Group has provided both management and specialist labour on this monumental project to our valued client BBV as part of their self-delivery works.

Understanding HS2: A Revolution in UK Travel

The HS2 project represents a transformative leap for the UK’s transportation infrastructure. This high-speed railway network aims to revolutionise travel across the country, particularly between London and the West Midlands.

Imagine significantly faster and more reliable journeys, with a dramatic reduction in travel times. Furthermore, HS2 will alleviate congestion on existing lines, allowing for increased local train services – a win-win for both long-distance and local commuters.

The Curzon Street Viaduct

Birmingham Curzon Street

The Curzon Street Viaduct stands as a critical piece of the HS2 puzzle in Birmingham. This awe-inspiring structure will serve as the grand entrance for high-speed trains arriving in the city centre, ensuring a seamless transition for passengers.

Work on Birmingham Curzon Street HS2 station update continues to progress in central Birmingham. Foundations are now in place with over 2,000 concrete piles completed, and construction is advancing on what will be a seven‑platform high‑speed terminus. When finished, Curzon Street will nearly halve journey times to London and act as a key gateway for HS2 passengers, integrated with local transport and supporting wider city regeneration.

A Committed Partner in Self-Delivery

Unlike many large-scale construction endeavours, Balfour Beatty Vinci (BBV) adopted a unique self-delivery approach for the Curzon Street Viaduct. This means AA Euro Group holds a direct role in the construction process, fostering greater control for the client and ensuring the highest quality standards are consistently met.

Quality and Efficiency

The decision by BBV to adopt a self-delivery approach for the Curzon Street Viaduct offers several key advantages.

Firstly, it fosters a more collaborative environment where all parties involved, including AA Euro Group, work as a cohesive unit towards a shared goal.

This streamlined communication and direct access to decision-making leads to a more efficient workflow and minimises potential delays often associated with subcontracting.

Secondly, self-delivery empowers AA Euro Group to leverage our extensive experience and expertise in construction labour.

By directly managing our team of highly skilled professionals, we can ensure the project adheres to the highest quality standards throughout every stage of construction.

This not only benefits the longevity and integrity of the viaduct itself but also reflects positively on AA Euro Group’s reputation for excellence.

Our successful contribution to this landmark project serves as a testament to our ability to deliver exceptional results in complex and demanding environments.

The First Completed Sections

The recent completion of the Curzon 3 viaduct marks a significant milestone for the project. AA Euro Group takes immense pride in contributing to this achievement.

The Curzon Viaduct is part of the Curzon Street Station approach area that will take the new high-speed railway into Curzon Street Station in the city centre.

V-shaped piers have been developed to support the viaducts due to the fact they take up less room at ground level and will have a side recess for future potential services to be visually integrated.

As well as separating the viaduct into four separate decks, the V piers will also help to maximise the opportunities to create a usable and flexible public space under the viaduct.

The construction process itself was no small feat. Our team meticulously poured a staggering 3,700 cubic meters of concrete and meticulously installed 88 concrete parapets, with many more to follow in the coming months.

A Viaduct that Enhances Birmingham

AA Euro Group is deeply invested in the continued success of this project alongside HS2 and Balfour Beatty VINCI. The Curzon Street Viaduct will not only serve as a crucial transportation artery but also contribute significantly to Birmingham’s urban landscape.

The viaduct’s design prioritises maximising daylight penetration and minimising its ground-level footprint and this foresight will pave the way for the creation of a vibrant public space that will become an integral part of the city’s life.

We at AA Euro Group remain enthusiastic about collaborating with all stakeholders to bring this remarkable project to life.

Stay tuned for further updates as the HS2 Curzon Street Viaduct continues to take shape and revolutionise travel in Birmingham and beyond!
